Some laptops are built specifically to play games and to use sophisticated software. When buying a used laptop it is possible to upgrade to a better graphics card. Buying the right graphics card for your computer will depend ultimately on what you are going to use your laptop for and the price that you are willing to fork over.

If you are looking for a computer to just the basics like using text programs, browsing the web, storing music, or for research purposes, you are not going to need much in the way of a good graphics card. These types of laptops can probably perform these functions with whatever card it already has in it. So if you are having problems with your laptop with these tasks, this article is not going to be of any use for you.

On the other hand, if you plan on using that laptop to play games on want it to run smoothly and as fast as possible with little to no lag, you'll want to find a high-end graphics card to help you out. The first thing you need to do before you buy a new high quality top of the line graphics card is to figure out if your computer can even handle the card. Some computers just will not be able to handle the speed of what these cards push out. So you will just end up with what you already have...no way to play video games on your laptop. Most dual processors can handle high-end cards. Just check to see what your memory and laptop processor is first to make sure it is compatible with the graphics card you are looking to buy.

If you find that the processor in your computer is not capable of handling the graphics card you want so that you can play games at the speeds they were meant to be played, then you may want to reconsider your plan completely. The price that you will have to pay for both may be more than that if you were to get a new laptop altogether.

As far as brands of graphics cards, in my honest opinion, I don't think it is going to matter much which brand you decide to choose. Each card that has the same specs will probably end up performing just the same. However, some companies may offer extended warranties or guarantees that others don't, so be aware of that.
