Overclocking a video card is used by many tech-savvy users to maximize the performance of their computers.

Steps :
  1. Update your video card's drivers. Go to ATI or NVIDIA depending on the video card you have. If you don't know what video card you have, run this program if you're using Windows: start -> run -> dxdiag. Go to display, and it tells you if it is an ATI or NVIDIA card. If you have an ATI card, use steps 2-12. If it's an NVIDIA, see below
For ATI cards
  1. Next, download an ATI tool (v0.25 beta 12 or 13).
  2. Install the ATI tool.
  3. Start up the ATI tool. Close any running programs.
  4. Follow any warnings given by the ATI tool.
  5. If you have the time, execute "Find Maximum Core Speed."
  6. Wait 10 minutes to an hour or until it is done.
  7. Lower the rate by 5-10 mhz to be safe. If the rate given is over 110% of the original speed, reduce it to 110%.
  8. Repeat this with the memory rate.
  9. Hit "Scan" for artifacts.
  10. Wait until the "no errors" timer reaches 10 minutes to an hour. If the timer resets or you see small white dots appear randomly on the screen, hit "Abort" and lower your memory.
  11. Once it's done, hit "Set Clock." You're done!
For NVIDIA cards :
  1. Go to "Run" in the start menu.
  2. Type in "regedit"and click OK.
  3. Then, in the folder tree, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then NVIDIA Corporation, then to Global, then finally NVTweak.
  4. Right-click on a blank space in the right pane, and say New > DWORD Value.
  5. Name it "Coolbits", and set a decimal value of 3.
  6. Click OK, and exit the Registry Editor.
  7. Right click on a blank area of desktop, and go to NVIDIA Display, then the name that shows up in the submenu.
  8. Go to Clock Frequency Settings, and click Manual Overclocking.
  9. In the Standard (2D) menu, go to Performance (3D), read the agreement, and click Detect Optimal Frequencies. Give it some time, and once it's done, click Test Changes.
  10. The testing can reset a few settings, so change your settings back to what they were. (apart from the clock settings)
  11. Click OK, fire up a game, and notice the difference.
